DIVISION DESCRIPTIONS

Division

                                                       Description

Recreational 6 on 6

This division will feature teams that may have some skilled players, but also many inexperienced players and the team as a whole is just in it for the fun. If several of the players are hard hitting and quite competitive in nature then the team should move up to a higher level. An average game will feature some bumping, passing and hitting, but the focus is often on just getting the ball over the net rather than executing 3 hits. Hard hitting is not allowed. Teams in this division must have a “fun first” approach to every game.

Note: Teams that register for Recreational but have had good success in this level will likely be moved up to a higher division before the season starts.

Intermediate 6 on 6

This division is for teams that are looking for more challenge than the Recreational (starter) level. Most players on the team have some experience playing Volleyball and are solid in the fundamentals, or a few players on the team are above average and can help carry the play. An average game will feature some good blocks and 3 hits on most plays, but the hitting is not usually very hard and the passes are not always crisp and accurate. Harder hitting is allowed, but most teams do not have organized attacks

Intermediate 4 on 4

This division is for teams that have more experience or past success than an average team in Intermediate 6’s. 3-4 players on the team are solid in the fundamentals, while 1-2 players are above average and can help carry the play. An average game will feature good blocking and passing, some organized plays and harder hitting. Games in this division look and feel like decent volleyball, but Varsity or College level players would be too good to play full force at this level.
Note: Teams that register for Intermediate 4’s but have had good past success with the SSC in this level may be moved up to a higher division before the season starts

Intermediate Plus 4 on 4
This division is for teams that have more experience or past success than an average team in Intermediate Beach 4’s. Players are looking for a good challenge each night and don’t want to play weaker teams that will result in a blow out. All players can pass with accuracy and each team will have 1-2 heavier hitters. An average game will feature crisp blocking and passing, some organized plays and harder hitting.
Competitive 4 on 4

This division is for teams that consistently play at a high level and would like to face strong competition each week. Other leagues in the city will feature more competitive teams, but this is the SSC’s highest level. Games in this division will be characterized by the following:
- The majority of players are experienced and play at least one position very effectively
- Harder hitting and solid blocking
- Good digs and crisp passing
- Female players are comfortable in a game with hard hitting
- Organized attacks

DIVISION NOTES

(1) SSC division offerings are based on the experience and skill level of the teams - not on their competitive behaviour. All SSC players are expected to play with a ‘fun-first, winning second’ attitude regardless of their division.

(2) The SSC may move your team up or down a division based on past results or the quality of other teams that have registered this season. Seeding for 2-3 weeks is another option the Club uses to re-align teams into the appropriate level after registering.

(3) Because the SSC does not host try-outs, teams/individuals/groups are expected to read the division descriptions and place themselves in the most appropriate division. If players are unsure of which division to register for, they are welcome to contact the office anytime for advice.
