General
Overview: The SSC is looking for running enthusiasts who are familiar with the City of Calgary's parks and paths. This job will include scouting and planning running courses for people of all running abilities. The successful candidate should be able to write running programs for beginners as well as advanced runners. The applicants must also be able to run long distances, while supervising and providing coaching to the group. We are looking for instructors who can commit to a 6 week program with a specified group of registrants.
Responsibilities:
- Ensure that all participants have completed the PAR-Q and Health History forms prior to the first class. Trainers are responsible for submitting this information to the SSC.
- Be prepared for each class with a prewritten and outlined course of each run. The trainer must be able to properly explain the route to the group, but also be willing/able to fall back and/or go to the front of the group to ensure everyone is on-course.
- Be aware of contra-indicators which may limit a registrant’s participation.
- Be able to regress and progress a run accordingly (distance, type (hills/stairs) etc).
Start
Date: Sessions begin the week of May 10th, 2009. The classes being offered are:
- Tuesday PM - starting at 6:30pm
- Thursday PM - starting at 6:30pm
Trainers can apply for one or two sessions per week, depending on their availability. Trainers are expected to be able to travel to a variety of locations throughout the city.
Completion
Date: Each session will run for a total of 6 weeks.
Hours:
Each session will vary in length from 1-2 hours depending on the abilities of the group. Trainers are expected to arrive at the location 10-15 minutes before the session start time and may need to stay after to answer questions and communicate with the participants.
Rate
of Pay: Group leaders will get paid between $30 and $50 per session.
Qualifications:
- Experienced runner
- First Aid/CPR
- Familiarity with The City's trails, hills and stairs
- Reliable
- Responsible
- Good Time Management skills
- Good Communication Skills (able to communicate effectively with participants and SSC staff)
- Good Leadership skills
