| CSSC Weather & Cancellations/Rescheduling
Policy
Spring/Summer 2008
-
Living in Alberta means that we will have some
unpleasant evenings and there will be some nights when we have to play sports
even though we might prefer not to. Dress warmly and get out there and have some
fun! -
The CSSC hosts hundreds of teams each season and this requires a lot of playing
fields. Re-scheduling games is extremely difficult (we can’t always book enough
fields to replay all the games), so we strongly prefer to see the games get played
whenever possible. -
The weather conditions can vary significantly from one field to another or from
one area of the city to another. This often contributes to our reluctance to
do a city-wide cancellation – if we know that some areas of the city are playable,
we will ask all teams to report to their fields to decide for themselves. If
half or more of the teams can play, that makes rescheduling the other games a
lot easier. In very extreme circumstances the CSSC will cancel (and reschedule) games. If
this happens, the games will be cancelled prior to 5 PM on game day. The cancellation notice will be posted on the website and emailed
to all leagues that are affected. If we have not cancelled the games, then that
means we have received no indication from the City, the facility, or our field
staff that our fields are unplayable. If the CSSC has not cancelled the games
then the ‘Rain or Shine’ Policy is in effect. * Note: the CSSC is not open on weekends so all
Sunday games are subject to the rain or shine policy! 2.
‘RAIN or SHINE’ POLICY -
Teams must report to
their field regardless of weather conditions, or be subject to default rules.
-
If
it is 'raining' at game time, the CSSC requires teams to wait it out for at least
20 minutes before deciding to call the game. If poor weather or slippery
field conditions are still a factor after 20 minutes, you must discuss rescheduling
options with your opponent prior to leaving the field. The CSSC will
help with rescheduling but you must provide 1 or 2 potential dates that both teams
can play on.
A.
Dates
must be on a day other than your regular league night B.
Dates
must be 1 week prior to the start of playoffs
* Note: We may not
always be able to reschedule the games (due to field availability and amount of
notice time) – so you are canceling at your own risk. 3.
PLAYER DISCRETION: Each player has sole discretion
to choose whether to play. If a player arrives at their field and
believes the conditions present a safety hazard to them personally, they should
choose not to play. Note: In the event of severe weather (electrical
storms, excessively slippery fields), games should be immediately stopped and
all players should take cover. Wait up to 20
minutes and if the severe weather passes, continue play and shorten the game
if required. If conditions do not improve, the game ends and the score is reported as is. (The exception to this is slo-pitch,
where the final score reported will be taken from the last full inning). 4.
CANCELLATIONS AND RESCHEDULING: Games cancelled by the CSSC: There
are two circumstances in which the CSSC will cancel and then reschedule games
due to extreme weather: 1.
At the start of the outdoor spring leagues, if
snow cover and/or extreme cold weather will prevent a majority of games from being
played. This decision will be made on game day by 5pm, only during the first
three weeks of the season. If the season start is postponed, the
games will be rescheduled by the CSSC. After this initial 3
week period, games will rarely be postponed. 2. If all teams in a division attend their games, but NO GAMES are played because
of the weather conditions, the CSSC will adjust the schedule to allow for these
games to be played at a later date. Most teams will have already rescheduled
their game at the field; teams that did not do this will be assisted by the Club. Rescheduling games where teams
can not play: To
better serve our players, we have adjusted our rescheduling policy. In order
to assist teams in corresponding with each other about re-scheduling a game, the
CSSC may give out phone numbers and/or email addresses of the 2 captains in these
circumstances: 1. If it is after 5:00pm and our website has reported
that “games are on”, and you know that your field
is unplayable, please contact the office so that we can assist you in contacting
your opposition at least one hour prior to game time. If we are still open when
you call, we will try to contact your opponent. 2.
If your
team is not going to attend a game, and if your team is not able to show up for
a legitimate reason, the Club will assist you in contacting your opponent and
help you to reschedule your game - if we have 48 hours notice. Your team
will not be charged the default fee if the game can be rescheduled before the
last week of the regular season. NOTE: a.
If the
make-up game is not played before the final week of the regular season, the game
will be recorded as a default to you. b.
It is
the responsibility of the team that cannot make it to the game to be flexible
on the rescheduling date, otherwise the game may not be played. c.
Your opponent
reserves the right to NOT reschedule the game. In this scenario, your team will
be assigned a default loss and charged the fee.
3.
Stanley Cup Playoffs. Please see
below for our policy. If
you cannot make a game for a legitimate reason and the other captain agrees
to reschedule the game, it is the responsibility of the 2 captains to find a field,
reschedule the game (minimum 1 week prior to playoffs) and make sure that the
CSSC receives the scores. This
policy is not to be abused. The following are not legitimate reasons for you
or your team to miss a scheduled game.
- You think it is too cold out.
- A few players on your team are sick or can’t make it (we can help you find
subs).
- You can’t field a full roster (but still have enough players to avoid a default).
-
You have other social plans on your game night. Each
team is limited to rescheduling a maximum of 1 game throughout the entire
season. Please
note that rescheduling your game is only to be used as a last resort. The “Rain
or Shine policy” will be the normal policy in effect. 5.
SHARING TEAM CAPTAINS’ INFORMATION: To
better serve our players we have adjusted our policy on distributing team captains’
information.
As mentioned
above, the CSSC may give out your phone number or email address
to an opposing captain. We respect your privacy and if you do
not want your information provided to the other captain upon their
request, we will not give it out.
NOTE:
If you decide that you do not want your information given out to other captains
upon their request, then you will not be eligible to request the contact information
for other captains. However, you will still be notified by the Club if your opponent
is going to default a game. 6.
SPORT BY SPORT CRITERIA FOR DECIDING GAME OUTCOMES:
Slo-Pitch Once
5 innings are completed, the game is eligible for a win or a loss in the standings.
If after 5 innings of play, the rain becomes heavy, the two captains can meet
and decide to: -
Call the game and the score will stand as is (from final complete
inning) -
Play out the inning to completion and then call the game -
Wait out the rain for up to 20 min. and then the team that is losing
can choose to have both teams play out the inning to complete the game -
Note: If 5(+) innings have been completed, the team leading
after the last full inning records a victory or a tie is awarded -
If less
than 5 innings have been completed, the game must be rescheduled and replayed
at a later date Outdoor Soccer
Once one half (40
minutes) has been played, the game is eligible for a win or a
loss in the standings. If after a complete half of play, the
rain becomes heavy, the two captains can meet and decide to:
-
Call the game and the score will stand as is -
Continue to play through the weather -
Wait Out the rain for up to 20 minutes and then re-evaluate the situation
-
Note: If 40 minutes (1 half) has been played and both teams do not agree on what to
do, the team that is behind at this time will be responsible
for the final decision (but the game will not be rescheduled)
-
If less than a half has been played then the game
must be rescheduled and replayed at a later date.
Beach Volleyball & Grass Volleyball The cancellation of Beach or
Grass Volleyball games is left to the discretion of the Volleyball Coordinator
that is on site (with input from the team captains).
-
Because
all games are played at the same site, we will not cancel games until one of our
field staff has visited the field to assess the conditions -
If the
games are NOT cancelled, then teams must attend in order to avoid defaulting
-
A minimum
of 1 complete game must be played for a match to be considered official -
In beach
volleyball, the sand does not become slippery when it is wet, so we are less likely
to cancel due to a wet playing area -
In grass
volleyball, excessively wet grass can be slippery for the players and result in
damage to the field, so games will be cancelled and rescheduled in this scenario
Flag Football & Ultimate Once a half has
been completed, the games are eligible for a win or a loss in the standings.
If after the first half of play, the rain becomes heavy, the captains and the
Event Coordinator can meet and decide to: -
Call the games and the scores will stand as is -
Continue to play through the weather -
Wait Out the rain for up to 20 minutes and then re-evaluate the situation
-
Note: If 1 half has been played and all teams do not agree on what to do, the teams
that are behind at this time will be responsible for the final decision. If less
than a half has been played then the games must be rescheduled and replayed at
a later date Note: - CSSC
Ultimate leagues play 2 games/opponents per night. If the second game can’t be
started, then these games will have to be rescheduled. - Because Flag Football
and Ultimate require an Event Coordinator (a pre-designated player on one of the
teams) to set-up the field and bring the equipment, it is very difficult to reschedule
games if the Coordinator’s team has decided to play through the weather but the
other teams have decided not to play.
** CALGARY
FLAMES PLAYOFFS & STAMPEDE: The
CSSC started in 1996 and it has always been our policy to NOT reschedule games
due to players’ Stampede commitments. If the Stampede will conflict with
your Spring end-of-season games, you should have plenty
of advance warning to find subs and play the games as scheduled. Regarding
the Flames and their playoff drive, we will not cancel the games on a playoff night
unless the Flames are in the last game of the Stanley Cup final (here’s hoping!). However,
if your team knows that they are not going to attend their CSSC game because they
insist on watching the Flames game, then there are 2 scenarios:
-
if we are given less than 48 hours notice, you will
default the game. We will contact your opponent so they don’t waste their time
driving to the field. -
If we
are given 48 hours notice, we will contact your opponent and encourage them to
reschedule the game. If they agree to, we will coordinate with both teams to
choose a date and a field. If both teams can not agree on a plan, then you will
be issued a default loss. |
