GYMS

About: The gyms are rented from the City of Calgary - Parks and Recreation or Private Facilities. Weekday start times (Monday to Friday) may range from 6:15 PM to 10:00 PM.  Sunday start times will range from 9:00 AM to 10:00 PM. During the week you can expect most games to be scheduled for later in the evening due early slots being reserved for youth activities. Please see more below on CSSC expectations regarding school and/or private facility use.

Permits: The CSSC has booked and paid for each facility that is scheduled for a game. Please pay close attention to the permit times on the schedule as players cannot be in the gym prior to or after the rental agreement time. Expect the schools to be LOCKED until 15 minutes prior to the start of your scheduled game time. If you arrive early and the doors are locked, please wait outside until the caretaker comes to unlock the door or until the Games Coordinator (GC) or Event Coordinator (EC) arrives.

Treat The Facilities Right: All players MUST respect the facilities, building property and the caretakers. Gym use is a privilege that should not be taken lightly. Please be kind to the caretakers in all circumstances and please treat the school as you would want someone else to treat your home. Be patient! If you have any comments about your school, please address them with the CSSC staff the following day by sending an email to scores@calgarysportsclub.com.
THE CLUB RENTS FACILITIES WHICH MEANS THE FACILITY STAFF MAY REVOKE OUR RENTAL PRIVILEDGES AT ANY TIME. Any player or team who causes The Club to get a complaint may, and likely will be removed from the league immediately.

RULES, WAIVERS, DEFAULTS & SUBSTITUTE PLAYERS

Your rules have been posted on the website. All players must know the rules before playing - NO EXCEPTIONS! If you are a new team or new player to the league this is VERY important as our rules are different from other leagues.  All CSSC leagues are self officiated; you are responsible for calling your own infractions.

Rules can be found on the website by going to the individual sport information pages listed above, click on the RULES tab at the top of the page.

Team Shirts: All sports (with the exception of volleyball, badminton and dodgeball) require each player to bring a white and dark colored shirt to each game. Teams will decide who is wearing what color at the gym. Players who do not have an appropriate shirt color to match their teammates may be asked not to play by the GC or the opposing captain.  Teams are allowed to have a ‘team color’ but should always bring a second shirt in the event that your opponent has the same ‘team color’.

Waivers: Have you submitted your waiver yet?   All players must submit a waiver every season before playing in the CSSC league: http://www.calgarysportsclub.com/register/waiver.shtml.  Even if you have played with the CSSC in a previous season, you must submit a waiver for EACH season that you are actively playing in the club.

Defaults: The ultimate in unsporting behaviour is to default!   Teams who default (no show, not enough players, late, etc) are charged a $50 fee with each default.   Teams who do not provide the fee will be suspended from playing until the bond is paid.  Please see the rules for default score and default sportsmanship ratings. Please remember, teams pay to play. If you default, another team doesn't get to play.

What does the CSSC do with default fees it collects? The fees that are collected from teams that default are given directly to the team that was defaulted against.  The CSSC does not keep any portion of the default fee.

Substitute Players: The CSSC feels that defaults should be prevented whenever possible.  Teams pay to PLAY!  Therefore the Calgary Sport and Social Club encourages teams to find substitute players to fill out their roster for a game.  Here are the CSSC guidelines for bringing in sub players:

1.  A team may bring in subs that are not listed on the roster.  Subs must not have, at any time, played at a higher skill level than the player(s) they are replacing.

2.  All subs MUST sign the online waiver prior to playing. It is the captain’s responsibility to make sure that this is done.

3.  If you are playing in a league where a game is being played before yours, you may only borrow players from the previous game to prevent your team from defaulting.  You can not add players from a previous game if it increases the number of players on the roster beyond a minimum number of players required to avoid defaulting the game.

4.  Teams may bring in subs for playoff games but these players must have played during the regular season with the team. There is one exception to this rule:   Your team is going to default due a lack of players.  In this case new players will be allowed to play but teams may only field a minimum roster to avoid defaulting.
a. It is each team’s responsibility to NOT bring in ‘ringers’ – respect your opponent and the league by making it a fair game!

5.  A sub-list can be requested from the office. Just email scores@calgarysportsclub.com to request a sub-list.  If you recruit a sub, it is your responsibility to ensure that they are ready to play (know the rules and have submitted a waiver).

GAMES COORDINATORS (GC’s) & EVENT COORDINATORS (EC’S)

Games Coordinators:  GC’s are CSSC employees. Their main role is to set-up the facility so it is ready for game time, keep the score and time, and report the results to the CSSC. They are also there to encourage sportsmanlike play and to help to keep the games running smoothly.  Players must understand the role of the GC and know what is expected as a player in the league.  The following is a list of the roles that the GC will perform during your game:

Pre-Game Intros - the GC will call in both captains for introductions, confirm which colour each team is wearing, define any particular court/gym rules, and provide league updates and other special notes.

Managing the Time - the GC will manage the game time on either a clock or their watch. They will ensure that the game starts at the scheduled start time and manage the time for the remainder of the game.

Keeping Score - the GC will keep track of the score.

Intermission - the GC will act as a 'mediator' for the captains during the intermission, they will also provide feedback to both teams at this time.

Officiate – the GC will call fouls or penalties when needed.  The GC is NOT a referee, CSSC leagues are all self-officiated.  However the GC will assist in keeping the game under control by calling infractions that are not called by the teams and by providing constructive and positive feedback to the players throughout the game.

The GC will eject players who are a threat to the fun or safety of their opponents - the GC is obligated by the CSSC to step in and assign a game misconduct if warranted by a player's actions. A GC cannot allow a player to continue who is jeopardizing the safety or fun of other players. See the rules for more details.

In some cases a GC may not be present to monitor the game. In these cases, the team captains are responsible for keeping time, keeping score and making sure that their own players are playing within the guidelines of the CSSC. The captains need to make sure that the equipment is returned to the correct location and report the score of the game and the sportsmanship ratings to the CSSC office the following day by noon. Phone: 244-7529 or Email: scores@calgarysportsclub.com

Event Coordinators: At each volleyball and badminton gym, there will be a CSSC player called an Event Coordinator (EC). This person is a registered player in the league. Their main purpose is to bring playing equipment and a score sheet to the games, update players with pre-game announcements and report the game scores to the CSSC. Please help them with set-up and take-down and make sure that you are helping them out by reporting your game scores to the scoresheet they have provided.  For more information on becoming an EC and its benefits (….FREE PLAY!!!) see the JOBS section of the website at http://www.calgarysportsclub.com/jobs/index.shtml .

SPORTSMANSHIP POLICY

Why is sportsmanship so important?
The CSSC emphasizes good sportsmanship before, during and after the games.   The reason this is important is that playing good sporting opponents and being a good sport yourself make the game fun for everyone.   Players who do not follow the rules, try to bend the rules, have intensity issues and/or lack respect or courtesy are NOT fun to play.  Every player who chooses to play in the CSSC is asked to abide by CSSC sportsmanship policies.  There is very little tolerance for players or teams who challenge these policies.  Play fair and be nice to keep the game fun for everyone!

If you commit to understanding your sport, it's rules and the expectations surrounding sportsmanship; not only will YOU have FUN but YOU will make the game FUN for those around you!

Rating Your Opponent

After each game teams will rate their opponent on their sportsmanship (the exception being volleyball and badminton teams).  The rating is a combination of how well they followed the rules, called their own infractions/fouls AND how much fun they were to play.  The GC will also rate both teams on their impression of those factors.  These ratings are combined and affect the standings.  Please review your league rules for more information on rating your opponent and the policy regarding -1 ratings.

How Does Sportsmanship Affect The Standings?

- REALLY REC- DODGEBALL Division: A total of five sportsmanship ratings will be given by your opponent and the GC. These ratings will be for the following categories: 1. Accountability 2. Fun & Excitement 3. Attitude 4. Sociability & Friendliness 5. Overall Experience Given by the GC. Wins and losses are not counted, the league champion is voted on by their opponents.

- REC Divisions: Sportsmanship ratings will be combined with the game result for total points in the standings. The sportsmanship ratings you receive from the GC and your opponent will be added to the points your team was awarded for the win, tie or loss.
For example: a team who wins the game and gets three +1 ratings will receive a total of 5 points. Another example would be a team who tied the game and got one 0 rating and one +1 rating. This team would get a total of 2 points. The lowest score a team could receive would be a -4. This would occur when a team loses the game, gets three -1 ratings and also loses a point for getting two or more -1 ratings in one game.

- ALL Other Divisions: A team's ranking in the standings is determined first by the number of games that you have won, tied or lost. A team gets 2 points for a win, 1 for a tie and 0 for a loss. Teams who share the same number of points will then be ranked according to whose team has a higher sportsmanship rating as determined by your peers and the GC (see above for more details). If that is tied, teams will be ranked according to which team has a better points for/against differential. A team who at the end of the regular season has an S/R rating of less than a '0' average, may not be able to continue with playoffs or in the next season. If a team receives a "-1" from both the GC and their opponent in a game, they will lose 1 point in the standings.

Where can you find out more information on the CSSC Sportsmanship Policy?

The CSSC Sportsmanship Policy is listed in each individual sports rules section plus on each sports information page as listed above.  Any questions regarding the sportsmanship policy can be forwarded to info@calgarysportsclub.com .

How does the CSSC acknowledge teams who are GREAT sports?

The CSSC started the LADY BING SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD in Winter 2005.  Teams who have been nominated by their opponents or a GC are eligible to win the award.   Tentative prizing is Lady Bing shirts, preferred registration in an upcoming season and your team’s name forever etched on a plaque and on the CSSC website.  You can nominate an EXCEPTIONAL team online or by email to scores@calgarysportsclub.com .
