Using a wingman / wingwoman is useful out at the clubs, but did you know it’s helpful on the court too? In this installment of Let’s Talk Strategy, I’m going to describe what being a wingperson is all about.
- The wingperson is someone who plays predominantly in the corners – think ‘right’ or ‘left wing’.
- If your team has control of the balls, your wingperson is not going to pick up and throw with everybody else.
- On a team throw, your wingperson may hang onto a ball and attack solo after the team has thrown together, when the opponents are least suspecting (also known as a ‘counter-attack’)!
- When the opposing team throws together, they’ll be quite vulnerable at the centre line. This is a great opportunity to counter-attack, but if the wingperson doesn’t want to throw solo, they can swoop in to collect the balls instead.
- It is strategic to pick a wingperson with higher agility and accuracy, although this is something that will improve with time and practice.
Give these tips a shot and see how far your team’s wings span.
