One of the many reasons I love working at the Sport & Social Club is their commitment to supporting local charities, groups and causes. This is near and dear to my heart, and although our Community Program has been active for years, it was in 2017 that the Club decided to focus on one main charity for the duration of the year. Down here in Calgary, we support the Hockey Education Reaching Out Society (HEROS) and our Edmonton Club’s main charity is the Inner City Recreation and Wellness Program (ICRWP).

The ICRWP addresses social, cultural, and health issues in Edmonton’s inner city by meeting the needs of community members who experience significant barriers to recreation. The program offers a broad range of activities, including visits to cultural events, outdoor pursuits, and of course…sports! Which is where we come in. The ESSC raised over $4,000 through their Friday Beach Volleyball Drop-in revenues, along with almost $2,000 with 50/50 raffles at their events. That’s pretty darn impressive and will go towards supporting the ICRWP programs throughout the year.

Feel warm and fuzzy yet? Well, there’s more! One of my favourite parts about our partnership with the ICRWP, is that a group from one of their Drop-in Soccer programs has now been playing in our leagues for the past three seasons. Boyle Street FC currently plays in the ESSC’s Thursday Recreational Gym Soccer league and it’s been an absolute blast having them involved.

Upon being nominated for our Lady Bing Award, their Team Captain said, “Eventually playing as a team in a fun first, winning second environment was brought up and it was just like the Drop-in atmosphere that most of us were used too. [The] summer was our first season, and we had a great time over the past few weeks, regardless of how many games we lost.”

We hope that they continue to have a ball with us for many seasons to come and we look forward to seeing what 2018 brings!
