Just like its vegetable counterpart, Squash has a lot of variety! Most differences pertain to equipment, and in a lot of cases, the ball.

Some beginners and recreational players may not know the differences between some of the ball choices out there for Squash, however, they are really quite simple. First of all, Squash balls have different coloured dots on them to determine their bounce and speed. The 4 colours and their meanings are:

  • Blue: fast bounce, very high speed
  • Red: medium bounce, high speed
  • Green: medium bounce, average speed
  • Yellow: slow bounce, low speed
  • Double yellow: slow bounce, very low speed

In order from blue to double yellow, these balls are ranked according to what type of player should use them. Blue dot balls are meant for juniors and brand new players, while double yellow dot balls are meant for experienced or advanced players.

The bounce and speed difference of the ball plays a huge factor in their playability. More experienced players need a ball that bounces less and moves slower, as they tend to hit the ball much harder than new players. New players need the added bounce from the ball to ensure that they can make the shots they want. It is best to start with a ball meant for new players when you are new to the game, and gradually make your way up to the World Squash Federation Official Double Yellow Dot ball!

Have fun out there.
