So you’ve finally decided to hop on board the Ultimate train, but you have no idea what you’re doing. Well, you’ve come to the right place! With our ‘fun-first, winning-second’ attitude, this is the perfect place to learn the game of Ultimate and perfect your pump fake (yes, that’s actually what it’s called).

Here are some tips for our Ultimate newbies out there:

  1. Never, and I mean NEVER, give up on the disc! A disc is catchable until it touches the ground. Go for the dive! Jump for the catch! I mean, how else are you supposed to impress the cute player on the other team that you’ve been marking a liiiittle too closely?
  2. Pump fake! All. Day. Long. Faking that you are going to throw one direction then actually throwing it in another will help get around that nasty defender.
  3. Take your time! You get 10 seconds for a reason. Don’t toss the disc away the second you get possession! Take a deep breath, take a look at where your teammates are on the field, pump fake around your defender, and then throw.
  4. Always try to catch with both hands. No, this isn’t just for newbies so don’t feel like a newbie when you do this! It is so much easier to catch the disc with both hands than it is with one. Only attempt to catch with one hand when you need those few extra inches of reach!
  5. Take a dump. No, not literally. PLEASE not literally. It’s 100% okay to dump the disc backwards. I know that most people hesitate to pass backwards after spending so much time working it up the field, but it works. If no one is open in front of you, have someone run behind you and toss it there. How does that saying go? 3 steps forward, 1 step back? Yeah, do that.

Remember, the game of Ultimate is ALL ABOUT FUN. If you’re not loving every second of it, you’re doing something wrong.
