Communication is Key

It’s game night, your laces are tied, your jersey is looking fly, and you’re ready to play. Now imagine with me the following scenarios…

Scenario 1: A ball is lobbed over the net. You think to yourself, “Surely someone else has got it.” Meanwhile your teammates are all thinking the exact same thing. Thud. The ball hits the ground.

Scenario 2: A serve comes over, aimed directly to land between you and your teammate. The pair of you lock eyes, like two cobra snakes asserting their dominance. While the pair of you attempt to mentally agree upon whose ball it is, thud, the ball hits the ground.

Scenario 3: The ball comes your way. You decide that this is your time to shine and go for the hit. Right as you are about to touch the ball, your teammate slams into you, Dwayne Johnson style. They steal your play, you go flying, and hit the ground hard enough that you can now smell what The Rock was cooking all those years ago.

What do all of these scenarios have in common? They could have been prevented by COMMUNICATION!

One of the most important things that you can do as a volleyball player is call the ball. A simple “Mine!” or “Got it!” can go a long way towards improving your team’s dynamic. Calling the ball helps prevent all of the above scenarios and has the added benefit of elevating your team’s gameplay. No more lost points due to your team not knowing whose ball it is!

So next time you hit the court, don’t be afraid to get vocal, and don’t forget to commit to getting anything you call.

Call your balls, loud and proud!
