For the past 30 years, the CSSC Field Maintenance crew has been a quiet (but mighty!) force behind the scenes - mowing, raking, and lining your fields to get them game-ready week after week. Our team has taken pride in showing up early, putting in the work, and leaving things just the way we like them: clean, crisp, and ready for kick-off or first pitch.
This year, we're being forced to hand over the lawnmower keys - whether we want to or not.
In 2025, the City of Calgary introduced a new policy and has brought on a third-party contractor to take over all field mowing duties. That means the CSSC is no longer permitted to cut the grass ourselves, even though we’ve already hired our Field Maintenance team and were ready to roll (literally). We still have the green light to rake the diamonds and line the fields, but the mowing? That’s out of our hands now.
Maybe nothing. Maybe everything.
The new contractor might absolutely crush it, and you’ll never notice a thing. But with dozens of busy fields on rotation every week, there’s a chance a few blades might grow a little taller than you’re used to.
If you show up to your game and the ball is getting swallowed alive by the grass, let us know! You can note it in your facility rating when you submit your game scores or give your Event or Games Coordinator a quick heads-up. We’re tracking all feedback and will share it with the City so they can see what’s really happening on the ground... literally.
We appreciate your patience as we navigate this change and your continued support as we work to make your Outdoor season as smooth as ever. Even if we’re no longer behind the mower, we’re still fully behind your experience, and our standards remain high. Trust us when we say the City of Calgary will hear from us if field conditions aren't up to snuff!
Here’s to a great season - fingers crossed we have nothing but fresh cut grass along the way.
