The CSSC just launched their brand-new Disc Golf League on Thursday nights at Currie Reservoir Disc Golf Course, and honestly, it’s about darn time! As someone who fell down the rabbit hole after watching James Conrad’s miracle throw in 2021 (for the unenlightened, watch this shot and tell me you don’t feel something), I’ve been waiting for something like this for a long time!
Disc golf checks a lot of boxes for me. It’s like ball golf’s, cooler, less pretentious cousin. You know, the one who shows up in flip-flops and still crushes it. A lot of the things people groan about in regular golf? Solved.
Don’t have 4-5 hours to hack your way through 18-holes? Try 18 holes of disc golf in a breezy 90-120 min.
Don’t want to drop $100 on a green fee? Grab your discs and walk on – most courses are free or take a friendly $5 donation.
Can’t afford a $2000 set of clubs. You can pick up a starter set of discs for $30 from the CSSC.
Worried about shanking your shot and losing a ball forever in the trees? Sure, you might still shank a disc (it happens to the best of us), but they’re way easier to track down. They’re 9 inches wide and brightly coloured – you’d have to try to lose one.
But listen, I’m not here to bash ball golf. It’s got its place. Disc golf just has a different kind of magic, and it’s something pretty much anyone can get into. Here’s why:
1. Easy to pick up, hard to master
If you’ve got a functioning arm, you can throw a disc. And watching that thing soar through the air is like slicing a hot knife through butter: pure bliss. That’s all you need to get started. But once you catch the bug, things get interesting. You’ll learn about different types of discs, flight paths, and throws.
Without getting too nerdy (but okay, a little nerdy): every disc has four flight ratings – Speed (how fast it flies), Glide (how long it floats), Turn (how much it curves right mid-flight), and Fade (how much it hooks left at the end). Physics, baby! Except this time, it's actually fun.
2. You’ll get moving and get outside
This isn’t a sport where you cruise around in a cart, sipping beer while someone else takes a swing. You’re on your feet, moving through parks and wooded fairways, getting your steps in, soaking up the sun, and okay maybe still sipping a beer. Toss in a few friends, and just like that, it becomes your favourite weekly ritual.
3. It’s just plain fun
I’ve brought my wife, my parents, my brother, and even my best friend out to the course... and wouldn’t you know it? They all loved it! Now it’s become our go-to activity whenever we get together. There’s something so satisfying about that perfect throw, even if it only happens once a round. And between the friendly competition and the banter flying around, it’s an absolute blast.
Now that the Club finally has a league, I’m stoked to join a fun-first, low-pressure environment where players of all levels can come out and give it a go. Whether you’re brand new or consider yourself a weekend warrior, it’s a great way to meet people, play outside, enjoy some friendly competition, and fall in love with a sport that doesn’t take itself too seriously. See you on the course this Summer!
